How to patch test properly

A patch test takes ten minutes and is the difference between a rescued item and a ruined one.

Pick a hidden spot

Inside seam, hem allowance, underside of an upholstery cushion, or a carpet offcut under furniture.

Apply, wait, check

Apply a small amount of the product, wait ten minutes, then blot with a white cloth.

Look for three failures: colour on the cloth (dye transfer), a lighter patch (dye stripping), or a change in texture or sheen.

If it fails

Stop. Rinse the test area with cool water, dry it flat, and move to a gentler product or a specialist cleaner.
