How to remove paint stains
Water-based paint is treatable while wet; solvent-based and dried paint usually is not.
Method
- 1
Identify
Check the tin: water-based (emulsion, acrylic) or solvent-based (gloss, enamel).
- 2
Act wet
For water-based paint, flush immediately with cool water until it runs clear.
- 3
Detergent
Work detergent in and rinse repeatedly.
- 4
Stop if dried
If the paint has dried or is solvent-based, stop and get specialist advice.
What makes it worse
- Do not use solvents without a patch test
- Do not scrub dried paint — it damages fibres
