How to remove oil or grease stains
Oil needs absorbing then emulsifying — water alone will not shift it.
Method
- 1
Absorb
Cover with talc, cornflour or bicarbonate of soda for 15–30 minutes, then brush off.
- 2
Emulsify
Apply washing-up liquid or a degreasing pre-treatment directly and work in gently.
- 3
Rest
Leave 15 minutes so the surfactant can lift the oil.
- 4
Wash warm
Wash at the warmest temperature the label allows; warmth helps release oil.
What makes it worse
- Do not rinse with cold water first
- Do not tumble dry a mark you can still see
