How to remove blood stains
Protein stain. Cold water only — heat sets the proteins permanently, so no hot washes and no tumble drying until the mark has gone.
Method
- 1
Rinse cold
Flush the back of the fabric with cold running water to push the stain out rather than through.
- 2
Soak
Soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Salt water (1 tsp per litre) helps on fresh marks.
- 3
Enzyme treat
Work an enzyme-based laundry detergent into the mark with a fingertip. Leave 15–30 minutes.
- 4
Wash cool
Wash at 30 °C or below and air dry. Repeat before any heat is applied.
What makes it worse
- Do not use hot water
- Do not tumble dry until the mark has fully gone
- Do not use enzyme products on silk or wool
